Nordic walking

Nordic walking is a type of total body walking that can be enjoyed by both non-athletes as a health-promoting physical activity and by athletes as a sport. The activity is carried out with specially designed walking poles similar to ski poles.


Nordic walking (originally Finnish sauvakävely) is a fitness walk with specially designed poles. Although hikers, backpackers and skiers have been using the basic concept for decades, Nordic walking was officially defined by the Mauri Repo publishing "Hiihdon lajiosa" (translation: "Part of the cross-country ski training method") in 1979. The Nordic walking concept was developed on the basis of an off-season ski training activity using one-piece ski poles.
